What Does CE Certified Mean?

CE marking (Conformité Européenne) indicates that a product has been assessed and confirmed to meet European Union health, safety, and environmental protection standards. In the UK, the equivalent marking is UKCA — though CE marking remains widely accepted and legally valid for products sold here.

For EV charging cables, CE certification means the cable has been tested and documented to meet the relevant electrical safety standards for its rated current, voltage, and environmental conditions.

Why Does It Matter for EV Cables?

An EV charging cable carries a significant amount of electrical power — a 32A single phase cable delivers up to 7.4kW continuously, potentially for 8+ hours each night. The consequences of a failure range from a tripped breaker to, in worst cases, a fire risk.

A CE certified cable has been independently verified to handle this load safely. An uncertified cable makes no such guarantee.

What's Wrong with Cheaper Uncertified Cables?

  • No independent testing — "IP55" and "32A" claims are unverified
  • Inferior materials — insulation, connector pins and locking mechanisms may not meet stated specs
  • Insurance implications — if a fire is traced to an uncertified cable, your home insurance claim may be refused
  • Warranty void risk — some EV manufacturers state that using non-certified charging equipment may affect your vehicle warranty

How to Verify a Cable Is Genuinely CE Certified

A legitimate CE certified cable should come with a Declaration of Conformity identifying the specific standards it has been tested against. Ask the seller for this document if it's not included in the packaging.

The CE mark should also appear on the cable itself, not just the packaging.
