Tesla vehicles sold in the UK and Europe come fitted with a Type 2 (IEC 62196) charging port as standard — the same connector used across all European electric vehicles. This means charging your Tesla at home or at any public AC charger is straightforward, and the cable you need is a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

Which Tesla Models Need a Type 2 Cable?

All current Tesla models sold in the UK use Type 2:

  • Tesla Model 3 — Type 2 port, up to 11kW AC charging
  • Tesla Model Y — Type 2 port, up to 11kW AC charging
  • Tesla Model S — Type 2 port, up to 11kW AC charging
  • Tesla Model X — Type 2 port, up to 11kW AC charging

If you have an older Model S or Model X imported from North America, it may have a different connector — but all UK-spec Teslas use Type 2.

Single Phase or Three Phase?

This depends on your home charger or the public charge point you're using, not your Tesla.

Single phase (7.4kW): This is what most UK homes have. If you're charging from a standard home wallbox or a public 7kW AC charger, a single phase cable is all you need. Your Tesla will charge at up to 7.4kW.

Three phase (22kW): If your property has three-phase electricity — common in commercial premises, some new builds, and rural properties with a 3-phase supply — a three-phase cable lets you charge at up to 22kW. Tesla Model 3 and Model Y support up to 11kW three-phase, while Model S and X support up to 11kW as well on AC.

If you're not sure, your home almost certainly has single phase. Three phase is less common in UK residential properties.

5M or 10M Cable — Which Length?

Choose 5M if: Your charge point is close to the car, such as a dedicated wallbox installed near where you park.

Choose 10M if: There's any distance between the charge point and your Tesla's charging port, you park in different positions, or you want flexibility. Most customers choose 10M — the extra length costs very little and removes the frustration of a cable that won't quite reach.

What to Look for in a Tesla Charging Cable

When buying a Type 2 cable for your Tesla, make sure it's:

  • CE certified — confirms it meets European safety standards
  • IP55 rated — weatherproof against rain, dust and moisture
  • 32A rated — handles the full 7.4kW single phase or 22kW three phase load
  • Lockable connectors — prevents accidental disconnection during charging

All EV-LEK cables are CE certified, IP55 weatherproof, and rated to 32A — built for UK conditions and backed by a 5-year warranty.
