The Nissan Leaf is the UK's best-selling electric vehicle of all time, and the Nissan Ariya has continued that tradition. Both use a Type 2 (IEC 62196) port for AC charging — the standard connector for all European EVs.

Which Nissan Models Need a Type 2 Cable?

  • Nissan Leaf (2018 onwards, 40kWh and 62kWh) — Type 2 port, up to 6.6kW AC
  • Nissan Leaf (2013–2017, older generation) — Type 2 port, up to 6.6kW AC
  • Nissan Ariya — Type 2 port, up to 22kW AC

The older Nissan Leaf models also have a CHAdeMO port for DC rapid charging, while the Ariya uses CCS2. For AC home and public charging, all models use Type 2.

Single Phase or Three Phase?

Nissan Leaf: The Leaf's on-board charger is single phase only, limited to 6.6kW. A single phase cable is all you ever need — the car simply can't accept three-phase power.

Nissan Ariya: The Ariya supports up to 22kW three-phase AC charging. If you have a three-phase supply and a 22kW charge point, a three-phase cable will allow the car to charge significantly faster. For home charging, single phase at 7.4kW is fine overnight.

5M or 10M?

The Nissan Leaf has its charging port on the front of the car — between the headlights. If your charge point is beside or behind your parking space, 10M gives you the reach you need without having to reposition the car. Most Leaf owners prefer 10M for this reason.

The Ariya charges from the front as well. Same recommendation — 10M for flexibility.

What to Look for in a Nissan Charging Cable

  • CE certified — meets European safety requirements
  • IP55 weatherproof — handles British weather reliably
  • 32A rated — correct rating even if the Leaf only draws 30A (6.6kW)
  • Robust connectors — front-of-car charging ports are more exposed

All EV-LEK cables are CE certified, IP55 rated, and backed by a 5-year warranty — stocked and dispatched from the UK.

The Leaf's Charging Port Location

One thing Nissan Leaf owners often find catches them out: the charging port is at the front, not the side. If your driveway has the charge point on the wall beside your parking space, you may need to position the car with its nose pointing toward the charger. A 10M cable removes this problem entirely.
