Which Connector Does a BMW Use?
All BMW electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids sold in the UK use a Type 2 (Mennekes) charge port for AC charging. This includes the i3, i4, i5, iX, and all PHEV variants of the 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X5, and more.
You need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home charging and most public AC charge points.
Which BMW Models Support Three Phase Charging?
- BMW i4 — up to 11kW AC (three phase capable)
- BMW i5 — up to 11kW AC (three phase capable)
- BMW iX — up to 11kW AC (three phase capable)
- BMW i3 (original) — up to 7.4kW single phase only
- BMW 3/5/7 Series PHEV — typically 3.7kW, single phase only
Check your car's spec sheet or the Charging section of iDrive to confirm your model's maximum AC charging rate.
Which Cable Length?
BMW charge ports are located on the front wing (passenger side on most models). If your wallbox is mounted near the front of your parking space, a 5M cable will reach. If the wallbox is further away, or your parking position varies, choose 10M.
Our Recommendation
- BMW i3 → Type 2 to Type 2, 5M or 10M, single phase
- BMW 3/5 Series PHEV → Type 2 to Type 2, 5M or 10M, single phase
- BMW i4 / i5 / iX → Type 2 to Type 2, 5M or 10M, three phase (if you have a three phase supply) or single phase
