What is a Type 2 EV charging cable?
A Type 2 EV charging cable (also known as a Mennekes connector) is the standard AC charging cable used by virtually every electric vehicle sold in the UK and Europe. It connects your electric car to a home wallbox, public charging point, or workplace charger. Type 2 cables support charging speeds from 3.6kW (single phase) up to 22kW (three phase) and are required for any untethered charging point. All EV-LEK Type 2 cables are CE certified, IP55 weatherproof rated, and come with a 5-year warranty.
What's the difference between single phase and three phase?
Single phase charging (7.4kW) runs on standard UK domestic electricity and is what most home wallboxes use. Three phase charging (22kW) requires a three-phase electricity supply, more common in commercial properties and newer builds. If your home has a standard supply, a single phase cable is all you need. If you have three phase available — or use workplace chargers that support it — a three phase cable lets you charge up to 3x faster.
Which cable length should I choose?
The two standard lengths are 5 metres and 10 metres. A 5m cable works well if your wallbox is mounted close to where you park, and is lighter and tidier to store. A 10m cable gives you the flexibility to reach awkwardly-positioned charge points, public chargers, or to park further from your home wallbox. For most home charging setups, 5m is sufficient. If you use public AC chargers regularly, 10m gives you more flexibility.
What does IP55 weatherproof mean?
IP55 is an international protection rating that confirms the cable connectors are protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. In practical terms, this means an IP55 rated EV charging cable is safe to use outdoors in rain, on damp driveways, and in typical UK weather conditions.
